This video down here is one I came across. It shows the manly figure in disney movies. I love disney movies, I have been watching them all my life. But honestly I had never realized how sexist they are. They just make this manly figure so much! Especially Mulan OMG i can't believe I had not noticed. Anyways I leave it to you guys to watch.
The last reading began talking about heterosexism and I can say that I learned something really important, the definition of the term, Heterosexism is the "overarching system of advantages bestowed on heterosexuals, based on the institutionalization of heterosexual norms or standards" and pretty much excludes everyone who is not. The reading them goes on to talk about oppression and religion. It is pretty obvious how much heterosexuality is superior to anything else. Its crazy that we are such a free country yet anyone who is not heterosexual is just seen as a bad person. I really think it is just something that will never change no matter how much we try. Its pretty much like asking for equality for women, we know that no matter how much we strive for it and fight for it, there will always be those who are will not let it happen...
Catalina, I totally agree the part about Disney movies, it sucks that now as adults we see the real truth behind them and have to realize they were so sexist! I liked chapter 73 with the poem A LOT! and like you, I liked how it pointed out that we have to respect ourselves as women because a lot of the time we hurt ourselves too. It's also very interesting and sad how we are privileged by being heterosexual and other sexes are seen as bad. I have to disagree with you a bit though, I know a woman will never be seen as equal as a man because he will always be seen or be expected to be powerful but we have to start somewhere and we can start with ourselves and see where that goes. Check out my blog! Great Post! =]
ReplyDeleteCathy, I love the video. I never realized myself how sexist they were. Great revelation. Its funny how as a kid we did not realize those grown up jokes but now watching them with my own daughter I see and cath everything that I did not as a kid.
ReplyDeleteI also agree, in every profession that pays well, its going to be male dominate but I think when more women get in the profession than they have no other option but to get use to us.:) You know a lot has changed since the 50's, 80's and even till today but there is still a long way to go, especially in the workplace.
Great post!
